Anyone traveling on Wild Terrains trips in 2025 will not be required to apply for ETIAS authorization before their trip.
ETIAS, which stands for European Travel Information and Authorization System, is a new, pre-travel authorization that will eventually be required for non-Europeans entering most European countries (including Iceland). The program is slated to start after September of 2026.
From everything we've already learned, ETIAS authorization will entail an easy online application you can submit on your phone or computer prior to your trip and will cost about €7. Once you apply, your authorization will be good for three years, or when your passport expires, whichever comes first. Your initial Customs and Immigration check may take longer than usual with your first visit to the EU on a new ETIAS authorization, but it should be fairly normal each time after that. ETIAS authorizes short stays of no more than 90 days in a 180-day period. Longer stays will still require a visa.
Wild Terrains is monitoring the roll-out of this new program and will continue to post updates as we learn more. You can also read everything ETIAS and then some here!
Traveling to Scotland?
Visitors to Scotland do not need to register with ETIAS, as Scotland is in the United Kingdom, not the European Union. As a member of the UK, Scotland requires travelers to be registered with the UK's digital entry and exit management system, called Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA).
