Argentina
At restaurants, the standard amount is 10%. However, note that you cannot leave a tip on your credit card - it must be in cash. In taxis and with smaller transactions, like a quick coffee in a café, rounding up and leaving the change is entirely acceptable. At hotels, you can leave gratuities for staff and housekeeping in pesos, though US dollars (even if they're small bills) are always appreciated.
Iceland
Tipping isn't mandatory or customary in Iceland, but it is always appreciated.
Japan
Tipping in Japan is a no-no. It can actually be perceived as rude, so it's best not to.
Spain
Tipping customs in Menorca, as in the rest of Spain, are relatively relaxed compared to places like the U.S. At casual restaurants, rounding up the bill or leaving €1–2 is appreciated but not expected. At mid-range to upscale restaurants, leaving 5–10% is considered generous if the service was good.
Mexico
The recommended amount in Mexico is between 10% – 20% (15% is a good standard in tourist areas) of the bill.
Portugal
Tipping isn't mandatory or customary in Portugal, but it is always appreciated. If you feel called to tip, one easy way to do it is to simply round up on your bill and leave the change.
Scotland
Tipping in Scotland is appreciated but not expected. At restaurants, if you receive table service and no service charge is added, leaving around 10% is standard. Upscale venues or exceptional service may merit 10–15%. Always check the bill first—many include a service charge, especially for groups.
USA
Tipping culture is alive and well across the United States. 20% gratuity is all but expected in restaurants and bars, and cash tips are always preferred.
Tipping Your Trip Leader
Wild Terrains is proud to pay our trip leaders extremely well - in fact, this is one of the reasons we have earned a B Corp certification. If you feel called, you may absolutely tip your trip leader at the end of your trip. This is not required and is at each traveler's personal discretion. Past travelers have tipped anywhere from USD $25 - $75 per person.
